A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's key government projects.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the national leader.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term finished the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its duties in civilian works. They were completed at an rapid rate, beating expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised significant concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party urged an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested until the completion of a full safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."
In response, the president asserted that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these vital initiatives.
